When someone uses the word "average" in general discourse, they usually mean typical, normal, or ordinary. An average house is an unremarkable house. An average day at work is one that is much like other days at work. In statistics, an average usually refers to a number called the mean. It is a mathematical attempt to capture the typical or normal score from a collection of scores. The average of a number of scores can be found by a simple formula: add all the scores then divide by N, the number of scores.
