Statistics TutorialsHow to do rigorous researchUnderstanding statistical theory is only half of the key to using it. The other half is knowing how to design and run an empirical research project. Good statistics applied to bad research is worse than useless: it is misleading. A t-test applied to a group with a selection bias can give the illusion of a real difference. Analysis designed for normal populations can provide spurious results when applied to other distributions. We have provided an introduction to some of the more important concepts in research methodology in our new collection of lecture notes, given in a research methods course at the University of Memphis in Spring, 2007. To learn about important statistics concepts, visit our Statistics Dictionary or our tutorials section, which is being expanded over the coming months.
